One weekend. Two races. 500 laps. One race track. 36 degrees of banking. That’s what remains in Cody Coughlin’s path as the 20 year-old chases history. Coughlin is attempting to become the first driver to win two Champion Racing Association Late Model touring series championships in a single season.
Coughlin, the 2013 JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Pro Late Model champion, leads the points in that series by 108 heading into Friday night’s 100-lap season finale at Indiana’s high-banked half-mile of Winchester Speedway.
On Sunday, the Joe Gibbs Racing Development Driver has 400 laps separating him from the ARCA/CRA Super Series championship. Coughlin leads the points standings by 13 in that division.
“This is going to be a tough, challenging weekend, but I’m looking forward to it,” Coughlin said. “I think that my team and I have what it takes to accomplish the goal that we’ve worked towards all season long, and that’s winning both of these championships.”
Coughlin certainly has what it takes to get the job done at Winchester Speedway. Coughlin won the ARCA/CRA Super Series race the last time he raced at Winchester on Labor Day Monday this year. He also scored a Super Late Model win at Winchester in 2014 and finished second in the Winchester 400 one year ago.
“This is probably my best race track,” Coughlin said. “I like going fast, and I like the challenge this place presents. That’s a big part of why I’m so confident heading into this weekend. Between that, and how well my team has worked all year long, I know we can be celebrating two championships when everything is said and done.
“I’m just so thankful for all of the hard work that everyone on my team has put in this year. Bringing in Jack (Smith, crew chief) certainly was a big help as he has done a terrific job this year. Kevin (Hamlin, team manager), Scott (Wimmer, spotter), Dave (Holt, crew member) and Jon (Ziti, crew member) have all been awesome this year and I can’t thank them enough. I also can’t thank my parents (Di and John) enough for all of their love and support and help in getting me to where I want to be, and of course my sister, Kennedi, too for always cheering me on. God has truly blessed me with a great family and crew.”
Coughlin’s weekend starts on Friday, October 7. Coughlin hits the track in the Pro Late Model for practice at 1 p.m. ET. At 2 p.m. he will hop behind the wheel of the Super Late Model for the first time of the weekend. Qualifying for the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour 100 is at 6:15 p.m. ET on Friday night, and racing will follow beginning at 7 p.m. ET. Qualifying for the ARCA/CRA Super Series Winchester 400 will take place on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. ET. The 45th Annual Winchester 400 will take place on Sunday, October 9 at 2 p.m. ET.
